Answers:
- How come ONLY my index page is not loading when I publish my
site?
Right click index.html (in FrontPage) select
properties -> select Workgroup, chances are that you have checked
off "Exclude this file when publishing the rest of the
web." =)
- How do I BACKUP my website using FrontPage ?
Easy :)
Open your web in FrontPage, as if you were going to edit it.
Next, in your folder list:
Click on the little - (minus sign) so that it changes to a plus and
pulls all of your files into the one directory named:
http://yourdomain.com/
It should also be highlighted now.
Next, go to "File"
Choose "Publish Web"
CLICK "Browse"
Now, select your desktop. We suggest you create a folder on your
desktop called "BackUp".
Now, select the backup folder, and click "Open"
Lastly, Click "Publish"
Thats it.
It may ask you some questions, but that is all you have to do. It
will copy/publish your entire site to that folder of your choice :)
- I want to get SSH but I use FrontPage2000 and I don't want
ANY problems. Will this interfere to any appreciable extent?
No, it wont cause any problems unless you edit
something UNIQUE to FP.
Also, some scripts, etc. WON´T run when FP is running on your site.
These should be the only two major issues.
- I removed Frontpage extensions, but now i want to turn it on
again. The setup from the admin menu says the request is sent to the
server, but nothing happens.
Be patient !
- I usually work directly on my websites using frontpage. what
do I need to do to activate frontpage for my domain.
Just go to your control panel, and CLICK on Front
Page, and then click the button to install the Front Page
Extensions.
- I uploaded the site though frontpage 2000 and it said
everything wenti uploaded the site though frontpage 2000 and it said
everything went fine. however when i go to my site it says
"under construction", whats the deal. i have frontpage
enabled, and ias far as i know everything works with it.
You probably have two index files... pull up your
web files and check for TWO index pages... one probably index.htm
and another index.html
delete the one YOU DID NOT JUST CREATE, this will solve the problem
:)
- I used FP2000 as my html editor and uploaded my files.
Everything went well exept for the fact that I inserted some
"hover buttons" on the pages. They did not load. If I hold
the cursor on them; it says: "load: class fphover
notfound". Could you help me with this?
You probably don't have the web loaded properly.
You are probably creating your site OFFLINE. THUS, the code/hover
buttons are refernecing your home computer, and not ON THE SERVER.
You need to READ our Manual on FP, and edit your site IN REAL TIME,
on the server.
This should remedy the problem.
- I uploaded my site using the above URL with FP2000. In order
for me to see the index page, I have to include /index.htm in the
address. Is there a way for me to get the index located at the root
directory so that the URL will pull up the index? Would uploading
via FTP correct this issue?
It should do this automatically.
If you have to put in the /index.htm then MOST LIKELY you have two
index pages.
The other is probably the default PREINSTALLED file called
indx.html
yes, the l at the end makes a difference... delete that file and
your problem should disappear :)
- Do you have STEP by STEP instructions on how to
PUBLISH/IMPORT an existing site/web with Front Page 2000 ?
Yes, we do:
http://x-mb.com/hilfe/import.htm
- Do you have STEP by STEP instructions on how to get started
with Front Page 2000 ?
No.
- I am creating a database search form on my Frontpage2000
web, could you please activate these features for me?? I get an
error message that the frontpage database something?? is not
available or configured for the web.
Thats right... you CANNOT use the DB functions of
FP without an NT server. We use UNIX servers, thus, you cannot use
that feature :)
- Is MySql database compatible with FrontPage?
No, it is not :)
- I need frontpage extentions added to my account.. what do I
do ?
You simply go to your online control panel, CLICK
the "MS FrontPage" button, and then Click install
frontpage :)
- formmail gives FrontPage extension error
You know you have FrontPage extensions, and yet
when you try to use formmail.pl, you get this message:
_____________________________
You have sent a form or have followed a link to a page that requires
a Web
server and FrontPage extensions to work correctly.
This form or FrontPage component will work correctly if you publish
(copy)
this web into a web server having the FrontPage extensions.
___________________________
SOLUTION: Use FrontPage's own forms.
FP has the equivalent of formmail, and it is very difficult to use
formmail and FrontPage together. Although it may be technically
possible, instructing a client on how to do this is simply beyond
what we offer in FP support.
- Changing Hosting Companies and Retaining Navigation in FP
If someone is moving their domain from one server
to another and they wish to maintain their navigational structure,
they need to open their current web and publish (File -->
publish) the site to the new location.
- Change Front Page User/Password
To change the user and password for FrontPage
login:
Go to the FP menu:
1. Click: Tools->Security->Permissions
2. Add:
Name, Password
3. click "Administer, author and browse.." radio button
4. Click "Apply" and then "Ok".
##############################
To change the password:
Click: Tools->Security->Password
Type in old password, then new.
################################
NOTE: Changing the FTP/account password does not change the FP
password.
When the FTP/account password is changed for an account, the
username and password must be changed manually by the client in
their FrontPage program. They log onto their subweb (on our servers)
with the old password to make this change.
- I changed my password on the CONTROL PANEL, and now FP wont
accept my new password ?
Changing the FTP/Account password does not change
the FP password.
When the FTP/account password is changed for an account, the
username and password must be changed manually in your FrontPage
program. Log onto your web/subweb (on our servers) with the old
password to make this change.
- Troubleshooting Common Problems with FP98
The following are common problems and solutions
encountered with using FrontPage and FrontPage98. If you are having
a problem not listed here, please feel free to contact support for
help.
Getting error - "Root Web Busy"
FTP or Telnet to your site and remove the "service.lck"
file in /www/_vti_pvt. This usually happens when a FrontPage session
is interrupted before completion.
Server timing out when publishing large sites.
This difficulty arises when the uploading link times out in the
process of copying the web to our server. The only suggestion
Microsoft has offered so far is to break the main web into a group
of sub webs on
your PC, then upload these individually. If this problem persists
for you, please contact support.
Getting Error - "Front Page Extensions not Installed"
We often see this error being reported even when the extensions have
been installed. If you get this error, please contact support and
we'll make sure the extensions are installed and repair them if
necessary.
NOTE: The extensions are easily corrupted. Please use only FrontPage
Explorer to update your web site on the server. Never use FTP.
I published but my web's not there!
This will happen when the "Destination Web Name" is filled
in when publishing to our server. This box should be left blank. If
you put any other name in this box it will create a subdirectory off
of your root web and copy all of your files into it. Your site will
exist under a subdirectory instead of at the top level /www where it
should be.
My counter, bbs, guestbook, etc isn't working.
These problems are generally due to incorrect permissions on either
the directory, file(s) or cgi script(s) that are associated with
them. Please don't change the permissions of your files or
directories unless you have a specific reason for doing so and you
know what effect it will have on your site.
My forms won't work through the Secure Server.
The call to a cgi script using the Secure Server must not be within
a webbot. Use a normal cgi call in your html script for Secure
Server calls.
My search bot doesn't return any results.
The /www directory must be world readable AND you need to
recalculate links BEFORE publishing (or after editing directly on
the server). If it still doesn't work: FTP to the server and go to
the /www/_vti_txt/default.wti directory. Delete any files that begin
with "ALL.". Don't delete any other files. Then using
Windows Explorer, do the same thing on your PC. Recalculate links,
test locally with your browser and publish.
FP starts the Web Publishing Wizard when I try to publish.
Cancel the operation and contact support to have the FP extensions
installed/repaired.
Why is my page renamed on the server when I publish?
The "Default Document" of your web is automatically
renamed by the server to what is required by the configuration of
the server. For example, if you've named the main page
"index.html", it may be renamed
"default.html". Just check the links to your main page to
make sure they refer to it the same way.
NOTE: If you are using FrontPage, you should NEVER use regular FTP
to upload your files. This will damage the extensions. Stick with
one or the other all the time.
- Getting Started with FrontPage
Open FrontPage 2000 and CLICK
File
Choose Open Web
Then type in your domain name in the FOLDER NAME BOX, type in your
domain name in the following FORMAT: http://yourdomain.com/ or
http://109.23.323.22/
YOU MUST put it in in this format or it will not work.
CLICK OPEN, and you may have to click OPEN again...
THIS should load your entire site, where you will be able to
dynamically edit the entire site.
- Open Your Published Web
Once your FrontPage Web is published and online,
you will need to access it to make updates and changes. Be sure that
you are connected to the internet before attempting to open your web
on our server.
1. Open FrontPage Explorer and choose File > Open FrontPage Web.
2. You can now choose to open a previously created web on your PC or
your web on our server.
3. Highlight the appropriate web or type in the web address
(www.yourdomain.com) and click OK.
4. Enter your Username and FrontPage Password if required.
5. Make modifications and recalculate links if needed. (See your
FrontPage Manual for info on when it's necessary to recalculate
links.)
- Restricting access in FP
If you want to restrict access to directories, you
have to turn the subdirectories into SubWebs and use FrontPage's
access restrictions. It's not that hard to do:
1. Create the subweb by doing File --> New -->FrontPage Web .
2. Select "Import an existing web".
3. Choose a title for your web. Since you can only restrict access
to a web that's on the server, be sure you change the path so that
it is going to the Internet location. Click ok.
4. It will start the process to make the new web.
5. The Import Web Wizard will come up. Select "From a World
Wide Web site". In the location box, put in the path to the
specific directory, for example, http://domain.com/members . This
will get only that directory, and not the whole web. Click next.
6. This is where you limit the amount of information you will
receive. Unless you know your pages are more extensive than these
defaults, just leave it at the default and click next.
7. Click finish and wait a few minutes as the content copies over.
At this point, you have all your information in a new web. Now you
can set up the restrictions.
1. In the FrontPage Explorer, click on Tools --> Permissions...
2. Select "use unique permissions for this web". Click
apply at this time.
3. Click on the users tab.
4. Select "only registered users have browse access".
5. Add any users you need, and then click ok.
- Publishing Your FrontPage Web
After you have built your web pages on your
computer, you will be ready to publish them. Basically, this just
means that you will upload them to our server. Once this is done,
your pages will be viewable from the web. However, you must do this
in the following manner. Warning: FrontPage Account holders should
never use FTP to transfer files as it can damage the FrontPage
extensions.
1. Launch FrontPage Explorer and open the web you’ve created on
your computer.
2. From the menu at the top of the window, select File, then Publish
3. A) If this is the first time you publish to our server, select
More Webs and enter the location you want to publish your FrontPage
web to. (www.yourdomain.com) Hit Return (Enter) on your keyboard.
B) If you have published to the server before, your
"Destination Web Server" (www.yourdomain.com) will appear
in the Publish window.
IMPORTANT: Use www.yourdomain.com as the Destination Web Server to
publish to our server. Leave the "Destination Web Name"
blank.
4. You will be asked for your USERNAME and PASSWORD. This is your
domain's User ID and your FrontPage Password (which may be different
than your regular Telnet/FTP/POP password). If you're not sure what
it is or if you aren't allowed past this point, you'll need to
contact us for a new FrontPage password.
5. You can watch the progression of the upload by looking at the
bottom left corner of FrontPage Explorer.
- Turning a subdirectory into a subweb
1. Create the subweb by doing File --> New
-->FrontPage Web .
2. Select "Import an existing web".
3. Choose a title for your web. Be sure you change the path so that
it is going to the Internet location. Click ok.
- What is Microsoft FrontPage????
Microsoft FrontPage is a WYSIWYG (what you see is
what you get) web building program. If you use, or plan to use
FrontPage to build and manage your website you must activate
FP in your control panel.
- I am using Frontpage. Does this confict with many of the
offerings of your site?
yes, FP will conflict with all kinds of things. If
you want to use anything with your site that is NON-FP, then it is
best not to use FP at all :)
